Going live, and where your offers are measured from

What Gaffr Live reads when you go live and while you are live, and how offers are measured.

Who it’s for: Crew members using Gaffr Live.

The short answer

When you press Go live, Gaffr Live takes one reading of where your phone is. Offers for work that starts soon are measured from there that day, not from your home. While you're live, opening the app takes a fresh reading, at most every 10 minutes. "Update where I am" takes one whenever you ask. Gaffr Live never reads your position in the background. "Work you weren't offered" shows what's holding offers back.

What happens when I press Go live?

If you've let Gaffr Live use your location, it takes one reading of where your phone is. It tells you why: "So Gaffr can offer you work near where you are today."

You go live whether or not the reading works. A reading less accurate than 2 km isn't used. If there's no usable reading, Gaffr Live says why:

  • "Location is off for Gaffr Live, so today's offers are measured from your home."
  • "Couldn't get your location, so today's offers are measured from your home."

Where are my offers measured from?

  • Work that starts soon is measured from where you went live that day. An Opportunity shows how far, like "4 km from where you went live".
  • Booked-ahead work is measured from your home address.

Gaffr counts a day from 05:00 to 05:00, UK time. Going live again takes a fresh reading and replaces the last one. Going live without a reading removes it for that day, so offers are measured from your home.

Getting offered more work explains the rest of what decides your offers.

What if I move while I'm live?

While you're live, opening Gaffr Live takes a fresh reading, at most once every 10 minutes. "Update where I am" takes one whenever you ask. Each new reading replaces the last one for that day, so your offers follow you.

Gaffr Live never reads your position in the background. It doesn't track you while you're live.

What if I go live far from where Gaffr has work?

You can still go live. Gaffr Live tells you that you're too far from Gaffr work for offers that start soon today. It says booked-ahead work still reaches you as usual.

Each new reading is judged again, so the message goes once your reading is closer to Gaffr work.

Who sees where I went live?

Gaffr keeps the point, rounded to about 100 metres, for 30 days after that day. Clients and site contacts never see it. It plays no part in which venues can be booked.

Gaffr's team sees it on a live map, rounded to about 1 kilometre, with the time it was taken. The privacy notice has the detail.

What is "Work you weren't offered"?

When no offer has reached you, Gaffr Live's Opportunities list shows bookings near you that you weren't offered, and why. Each row gives a day, a part of the day and a role, like "Saturday evening · Rigger". It never gives the time, the place or the length.

Each reason is something you can act on. Examples are:

  • "Rigger isn't in your skills"
  • "Outside your availability"
  • "Notifications are off"
  • "Your live time ends too early"
  • "Pays less than your rate"
  • "Your public liability insurance runs out before then"

"Pays less than your rate" never says by how much. Gaffr Live never shows a client's maximum. A change to your rate counts here within the hour.

Under "Get more offers", Gaffr Live suggests what to change. "Last 7 days near you" shows bookings that have gone, taken or not, so you can be ready next time. A quiet week may show nothing.

You see the rows once your documents are approved. Before that, Gaffr Live shows what's still needed.
