The short answer
You set your own hourly rate in Gaffr Live, and Gaffr takes none of it. Each client sets the most they'll pay an hour for a booking. You're offered bookings where your rate is at or under that maximum. If you want more for a particular job, you can send one counter offer. Gaffr never suggests what to charge.
How does my rate work?
- You choose it, between £1 and £500 an hour. The limits are there to catch typing mistakes.
- It decides which Opportunities reach you: those where your rate is at or under the client's maximum.
- It never changes your place in the queue. A lower rate doesn't get you offered first.
- A new rate applies to new Opportunities. Bookings you've already accepted keep the rate they were booked at.
What's the client's maximum?
When a client books, they set the most they'll pay an hour. Crew don't see it. An Opportunity shows your own rate, even when the client's maximum is higher.
A booking may go unfilled while at least two crew who were free charge more than the maximum. Gaffr can then tell the client that a higher maximum reaches more crew. It doesn't show anyone's rate or how many.
How does a counter offer work?
If you want more than your rate for a particular job, you can press Counter on the Opportunity.
- You can send one counter per booking. If the booking reopens later, for example because the crew member booked releases it, you can counter once more. It has to be above the rate on the Opportunity.
- A counter is a firm offer: if it's accepted, you're booked at that rate. While a counter above the maximum waits for the client, you can take it back. That counts as declining.
- You can add a reason if you like: "Short call", "Travel", "Anti-social timing" or "Other". The reason shows in your Earnings.
- The Opportunity's timer pauses while you're writing the counter, for up to 2 minutes.
What happens next depends on the client's maximum, which you don't see:
- At or under the maximum: you're booked straight away at your counter rate.
- Above the maximum: the client decides whether to accept. Until they do, the booking stays open to other crew.
Being booked straight away tells you the client's maximum was at least what you asked. Gaffr doesn't suggest an amount, and a counter doesn't change Gaffr's fee to the client.
Does turning work down count against me?
No. Declining an Opportunity is free, and there's no minimum acceptance rate.
How do I decide what to charge?
That's your decision. Crew often weigh up the role, the hours, travel and the time of day. Some also weigh the tickets a job needs and their own costs, such as insurance.
Gaffr doesn't publish suggested rates, and doesn't endorse anyone else's.
Is my rate everything I'm paid?
Your rate × the booked hours is your Crew Member fee, and you're paid all of it. Gaffr's own fee is charged to the client, not taken from you. Getting paid explains when it arrives.
Where are the crew terms?
In Gaffr Live, accepted when you join. They're being rewritten to match how the app works today. The terms page lists where they're out of date.
